Dowanhill

Dowanhill is a district of Glasgow occupying the area west from Byres Road to Hyndland Road, and south from Great Western Road to Highburgh Road. Constructed in the later half of the 19th Century it generally contains a mixture of terraced townhouses and large detached villas. Many of these buildings have now had their original interiors reconstructed to convert them into multiple flatted dwelling houses, this type of redevelopment continues to the present day.

It is a quiet and leafy residential district with private communal gardens dotting the area. It has the added attraction of being situated between the popular Byres Road area with its many bars and restaurants and the quieter district of Hyndland with its well-kept tenements, cafés and shops.

Like many areas of the West End continued redevelopment causes concern for many residents who fear the character of the district is changing and the area is becoming over-developed. In 2005 due to increased traffic levels and to discourage 'rat-running' Glasgow City Council introduced traffic calming measures.

In 1869 Jefferson Davis, the first and only President of the Confederate States of America, stayed in Dowanhill while visiting the Glasgow merchant James Smith (Urquhart 2000, p. 28).
