Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is the name of an area, formerly in Lanarkshire and now a suburb in the east end of Glasgow. Originally, called Windy Edge, in 1742 it was renamed to its present appellation by a West Indies merchant called Robert Boyd who had purchased the property in the previous November. This is the first 'Mount Vernon' in the world - before its more famous namesake in the United States. Windy Edge is recorded in the Rental book of the Bishopric of Glasgow from the mid 16th. Century. A suburban rail-line was installed in the mid 19th. Century, was closed in the early 20th. Century but re-opened in the early 1990's.

Today, Mount Vernon is an affluent, leafy suburb, comprising of houses and bordering a golf course. There is no industry.
