The Arches in Glasgow is one of Europe's leading cultural venues, providing a multiplicity of unconventional and dynamic spaces. We aim to create artistic work and stage performances by professional artists as well as opportunities for new artistic talent - world-class events alongside the new and the experimental.

The Arches always aims to be at the forefront of artistic innovation - to be vital and challenging. At the same time the venue aims to be populist and accessible to all people.

The Arches aims to serve the community of Glasgow and the west of Scotland in particular but also has a national and international remit - more than 200,000 people visit the Arches each year.

The Arches is an inviting place to meet, eat, drink, discuss ideas and introduce new initiatives and directions.

Events at the Arches include theatre productions - both in-house and touring, concerts, festivals, club nights, exhibitions, corporate events, classes and workshops.

The Arches aims to be a model for arts practice elsewhere; one in which artistic innovation and experimentation, education and training can work alongside populist events and commercial enterprise in a dynamic and highly stimulating creative environment.

While the Arches receives Scottish Arts Council and Glasgow City Council financial support 85% of its income is self generated.

The Arches is both an arts receiving and arts production house in the heart of Glasgow. As such, its foremost aim is to provide a programme of arts events which reflects the cultural aspirations and interests of the local Glasgow community. This is an acknowledgement by the Arches of the need to be vital and relevant to the city that it serves. At the same time, Glasgow is a European city with strong international ties and interests. The Arches aims to mirror the city’s cosmopolitan aspirations as well as forging new international links and developing new types of cultural activity.

The Arches is a registered Scottish charity and non-profit organisation. The Arches was established in 1991 by its present Artistic Director, Andy Arnold, initially as a theatre venue. Theatre is still at the core of the organisation and the venue has it’s own in house production company, Arches Theatre Company which tours internationally and is funded by the Scottish Arts Council. However, the venue is now also a leading producer of live concert events, late night clubs, exhibitions and a variety of other arts events.

The building houses a variety of flexible performance spaces and temporary exhibition spaces on the main or performance level floor of the building as well as workshop, sound recording studio and rehearsal spaces on the lower or production level floor. This lower floor also contains dressing rooms technical and equipment stores, design and production offices, wardrobe and props rooms. The venue maintains its old entrance on Midland Street for late night club events and larger live music events.

In particular the Arches has unique characteristics which enables the venue to run a festival style programme on a regular basis i.e. a range of events and performances taking place throughout the building at the same time and throughout the day. Such festivals include the National Review of Live Art, Instal, Celtic Connections, Arches Theatre Festival, Arches Live – seasons of new work, and Inspiration.

Since refurbishment, the Arches has now become an accessible venue for people to meet, eat, drink and socialise as well as visit and participate in arts events.
